Oster OGB5902 Microwave Review

Microwave Cooking Made Easy

Like every appliance in the home, it will eventually reach the end of its life and that happened with my microwave recently. Instead of just going to my local store and picking something up that looked like it would do the job, I decided to do some research first. After all, microwave ovens have changed a lot over the years, and boy they sure have a lot more features than they used to.

In this review, I’m going to tell you about the Oster OGB5902 0.9-Cubic Feet Microwave Oven which comes in black. What I will tell you is this one was a little basic for my needs. In fact, I decided to add this model because I think it will suit people who live busy lifestyles that don’t allow for cooking from scratch. I also think it’s a great option for those of you who are of the younger generation and are still discovering what a kitchen is all about.

So let’s start with the one thing that always catches the eye.

Looks and Design

As said, this microwave is predominantly black with a silver strip across the bottom. It doesn’t have a pesky handle to deal with (something I’ve always found pretty annoying, especially from a cleaning point of view). Instead, all you need to do is press a button and the door springs open.

You have a really easy to understand set of one touch controls to the front, which includes the numbers 0-9 along with various options such as popcorn, potato, frozen dinner, reheat and a number of others that will make life much easier when you want to do something really simple.

Capacity

This is pretty much always first or second on the list because it’s not always that easy to gauge if a microwave oven will handle the size of plates or bowls you have. This one is 0.9 cubic feet which means it will easily house a standard sized dinner plate.

There is 900 watts of power to “play” with and a massive 10 adjustable power levels, which for the price makes this a pretty versatile little microwave.

Features

There are two specific features I really like with this model. On the control panel you have the option to choose from: Defrost by weight or Cook by weight. This is something I’ve always struggled with when using a microwave. Sure, most ready-made meals come with instructions but what if you want to defrost, or cook a piece of meat or fish?

Having these two options takes the hassle out of having to calculate how much time you need to put something in the oven for, and it also makes it safer especially when you’re dealing with fish! If you know what you’re doing on defrost the manufacturer has added a “speed defrost” option as well.
I have also seen some very favorable comments about how evenly this microwave cooks which is also important when dealing with meat.

Other Neat Little Touches

Unlike a lot of brands, this microwave has a glass turntable which can be removed for easy cleaning. It also has a keypad lock so little fingers can’t get busy! However, do bear in mind you can’t lock the door so children can still open it if they can reach.

There is an interior light which comes on when you open the door and stays on when the microwave is in operation (perfect for watching that popcorn grow). Whilst on the subject of aesthetics again, there is also a digital timer which doubles as a clock as well.

The only thing I will say is this microwave oven is pretty lightweight. This is great if you need to lift it but for people who are a little heavy handed, you might need to take care.

In Short

For the money, and you can find the price at Amazon along with some pretty good discounts, this microwave won’t cost you a fortune. Plus it’s got enough features to make cooking less of a chore for people who don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
