Westinghouse WCM660B Microwave Review
Best Microwave for Seniors

Things change as we age. We can try to deny it or avoid the conversation as much as we want, but it won’t change the reality of it all. So, in the interest of getting down to the truth of the matter, let’s talk about my favorite microwave for seniors. Allow me to quickly state that there are many other people in this world who could find this particular microwave helpful as well. I don’t want to limit this option only to seniors, I just want to point out to you how great of an option it could be if you struggle with eyesight problems or arthritis.

Dials Are Great for Those With Poor Eyesight

Look, it’s no secret that our eyes start to give way as we get older. Mine began giving way long before the typical person, so I feel I have a right to discuss these sorts of things. I’m not trying to make fun of any seniors out there, I’m simply pointing out a fact – it gets more difficult to see what you are doing as you get older.

The easy-to-use dials on this unique microwave tackle both of these problems. Though they do, just like microwaves with buttons, have small, difficult-to-read labels, they are much more straightforward. In fact, you really don’t need to be able to read the labels to know how long or how strong you are setting your microwave. As long as you know which knob adjusts the power level and which knob adjusts the timer, you can use common sense to figure out where along those spectrums you’ve placed the dial.

Dials Are Great for Arthritis Sufferers

With age it can also get more and more difficult to push buttons. Though a lot of people think pushing a button is one of the easiest ways to work a device such as a microwave, people with arthritis know that this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, pushing a button puts too much pressure on finger joints and causes pain. Sometimes, older adults simply do not have the strength to accomplish the task.

The dials are very easy to turn and will require little effort on the part of the user. Simply turn them and walk away. You won’t need to struggle to push down on a button. You can use your fingers or even the palms of two hands to turn these large knobs – whatever works best for you.

For Those Who Value Simplicity

This microwave doesn’t really have any special features or functions. There are no pre-programmed settings. You cannot cook by weight. Basically, you can cook by time and you can defrost. That is all. You know what, though? That is actually preferable for a lot of us.

While I love the special features on my own microwave, I have to admit that I rarely use them. I also have to admit that I have scratched my head on more than one occasion, wondering why I paid extra money for a microwave full of options I rarely use. For those who like simplicity and who never plan to use the special features and functions built into many microwaves, this alternative may be the best option available on the market today.

Sizes and Colors

Two size options allow you select the microwave which will fit best in your space. I also think it is important to select a microwave based on the size of meals you usually cook inside it. For example, if you cook a family-sized roast beef in there each week, you will want a unit large enough to accommodate that. If, on the other hand, you only use it to reheat individual meals and pop the occasional bag of corn, you really only require a small unit. That all being said, though, there is nothing like getting home with a large microwave and finding you have nowhere to house it. With this model you can choose either a 0.6 cubic foot unit or one which is 0.9 cubic feet.

Features and functions, power levels, and ease of use are important to all of us. But let’s be honest here – a lot of us care about appearance as well. Depending upon the style of your kitchen, you can select either a black unit or a white unit. Some people will be disappointed to see that a stainless steel option is not available. If, however, you can open your mind a little, you will find that a black or white microwave can actually fit nicely in a kitchen made up of predominantly stainless steel appliances.

If you prefer ease-of-use over complex and hard to operate, this is the microwaves for you. And to make it even better, you can get the Westinghouse here on Amazon for a very affordable price.
